London Olympic Velodrome

I wish I could ride this track!

Alpenrose resurfacing photos!

I stopped by the velodrome to see how the progress is going and it looks pretty good. Both straights are dug out and it looked like they are installing rebar in the back straight to get ready for the new concrete. I’m super pumped to be able to ride the new surface! Hopefully we won’t need to put duct tape over the holes anymore!

American Track Racing Association’s 2012 Season Guide!

So a while back I entered a photo into the American Track Racing Association’s contest to have your photo featured on the cover of the 2012 season guide. I didn’t think anything of it other than “Hey that would be awesome!” so I went through my photos that I have taken from last season and found one I thought would be perfect for the contest. After a few weeks I completely forgot about entering and I was looking through my email inbox and stumbled across an email from Jeff Hopkins over at ATRA saying that my photo had made the final 3 and will be featured on Facebook where friends/fans of ATRA could vote on which photo they liked the best! Wow I was really excited about this and headed over to facebook to let all of my friends know and to let there friends know to head on over and vote for which ever photo they liked the best! This was probably the longest week of my life because I was going up against some really talented photographers and amazing photos! I probably refreshed the facebook page about 500 times a day. I kept a steady lead thanks to all of my friends and family who shared as well as everyone else who thought my photo was the best of the three. Once voting was closed I was in the lead! My photo had won! How excited was I? You probably have no idea. I have never really taken my photography serious and do not consider myself a professional at all. I just love track racing and love to take photos and I guess that was a good combo on this occasion. But anyhow, I waited for the official word from Jeff which came a few days later that I had won and the season guide would be released sometime in late March or early April. Well a few days ago ATRA posted to the blog they run that the guide is close to being done and ready to be shipped out to member velodromes and to who ever signs up to get one shipped directly to them. Wow Let me just take this in for a second…a photo I took is going to be published and delivered to almost every velodrome in the USA and to whoever else wants one? Pretty awesome I think.

Here it is! The Photo is of Project London 2012 rider Kevin Mansker during his Kilo effort at the 2011 Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge here in Portland, OR. Oh yeah he set a new track record on this effort as well!

Thank you to everyone who voted and made this possible!

If you would like one please head over to the ATRA website and pick one up!

One Track Mind

One Track Mind from stacy vogwell on Vimeo.

Have a glimpse of what I love to do during the summer months and why I put in so many miles during the other months!

Spotted this over on one of the social networks and thought it was worth a share. If you have ever looked at my blog you know that I like…no love cycling, all kinds but most of all I love track cycling. It is all I think about. I love it, watch it and some would say i obsess over it. My favorite part of track cycling is the small sense of community. Go to your local velodrome for a few nights and I can bet you will get hooked. Single speed bikes with a fixed wheel and no brakes going as fast as the human body will let them go…there is something magical about it. The best part of this clip is that most of it is filmed right in my backyard at Alpenrose Velodrome in Portland, OR. Ok ok ok it’s not in my backyard but about 2 miles from my backyard which is close enough right? If anyone is ever here and wants to ride the velodrome I am more than willing to show you how and get you involved in this awesome sport!

Giro Events Presents: Rose Garden Circuit Race

Now I have never really been interested in road racing but this looks like fun…and by fun I mean a brutal time! I think I am going to make this series my introduction to racing on the road. I have become very fond of the west hills and know the pain they can bring.  So who is with me?

This is an OBRA sanctioned event, all OBRA rules apply. For more information, visit www.obra.org.
More Very Important Details

Please take the following three points seriously, our continued enjoyment of this venue depends on it.
Washington Park is a public park –  It will remain open to the public during this event. The race ONLY has permission to close down the streets during this event. DO NOT block walkways, sidewalks or any other path that may inhibit park guests from also enjoying the park while we are there. We will do our best to have volunteers to help direct park foot traffic around and through the course, but please also help any park goers you may see to keep things safe.
Respect the Neighbors – Washington Park and the race course is surrounded on the North side by the Arlington Heights Neighborhood. They have been subject to many unauthorized ”races” that disrupt the park and their neighborhood. Please think about this while attending the event. Use the provided toilets, don’t park in front of their houses, drive slowly through their neighborhood and please try and stay quiet when coming and going. Also, please pick up your trash and leave the park better than you found it.
Parking is limited, please ride there - The race course is taking up one of the parking lots and some street parking at the rose garden. This will limit the amount of parking that is available for regular park visitors and race participants. If you are coming from the Portland area, please think about riding to the event or taking mass transit. If you are coming from out of town, please try to carpool.
Directions

The main entrance to Washington Park via Park Ave may be backed up because of the course detours we will have in place. If riding your bike, feel free to ride up Park Ave. or take the MAX up to the Zoo and ride down through the park.
Please use these recommended routes if you are driving:
From downtown take W Burnside St. west and turn left on SW Tichner Dr then right on Kingston Ave.
From the west side, please exit from Hwy 26 at Sylvan and take SW Skyline north to SW Fairview and then right on Kingston Ave.
From I-5 North, take I-405 North and take the A2-Salmon St exit. Continue north on 14th Ave then turn left on Burnside. Turn left on SW Tichner Dr then right on Kingston Ave.
From I-5 South, take I-405 South and take the A2-Couch St exit. Turn right on Burnside, left on SW Tichner Dr then right on Kingston Ave.
Please park by the tennis courts or the parking lot on the west side of the street by the Japanese Garden sign.

Alpenrose is in need of a remodel and needs your help!

This winter Stewart Campbell did an excellent job of power washing the
velodrome to remove the old and flaking paint from the surface which was
keeping new paint from adhering. When he got done it gave us an excellent
view of the deteriorating concrete that had been masked by years of layers
of paint. It was obvious that substantial work needed to be done to keep
the velodrome running. In looking at the options we found that destructing
and rebuilding the straights would fix most of the problems and, although
expensive, could be done at a price that was not astronomical. I have
gotten a bid on doing this as well as removing and replacing the apron.
This project will make almost a new velodrome and will keep Alpenrose
running for the next 20-30+ years.

I spoken with the owner at the Dairy and he agrees that this needs to be
done. He has asked that we solicit help from the cycling community to
offset the large cost. This is a very reasonable request as Alpenrose not
only provides us with the velodrome at no cost. They also provide the
storage space for vehicles and equipment that allows OBRA to run its
business at no cost.

When we did the project to redesign and rebuild the transitions in 1998 I
asked members of the bike racing community to make donations. I also asked
that people commit to making a similar donation each year for a total of 5
years. This allowed me to go to the Dairy with a sum of money and a promise
to for continued input.

I am asking that people contact me if they are willing to make donations.
Any amount would be great but it would take many people donating $100 or
more to get this project moving. Let me know if you are willing to make a 5
year commitment. Please direct payment to:

Portland Velodrome Committee

The Alpenrose Dairy has contributed greatly to the success of bike racing
and they have never asked for anything in return. This is an opportunity to
show them how much you appreciate their support.

If you can help out in anyway that would make things go a lot smoother! Even if it just means spreading the word!

Team Cthulhu Sunday ride to sauvies island

Today was another wonderful ride with members of Team Cthulhu we had a small group that rode out to sauvies island and back which is always beautiful. Today was especially nice with a high of 60 according to the weather channel iPhone ap. That meant half way through I ditched the jacket and leg Warmers and was extremely happy to do so. Always a good time and looking forward to the next ride.

I never thought it’d be you
I never thought it’d be me

Jack Frost 2012

CTH_1181

CTH_1185

CTH_1189

Jack frost was a painful fun time. I beat my time by over 2 mins from the previous year and am even more anxious for track season to get here.

12 miles in 0:34.41 on my track bike.

Like always big ups to Jose Sandoval for the photos!

Tomorrow is Jack Frost

I am by no means a Time Trialist but I decided last year to do this as a way to gauge my fitness and let’s say I disappointed myself last year. However this year is a new year, a year that I have been working my ass off to train hard get stronger, faster and in better shape. The only person I care to beat tomorrow is myself. A test against the clock to see how much my work has paid off. It will also be nice to be able to hang out with some of my new teammates this year. Because if you have ever waited around for a time trial you know how boring it is.

Just remember 12 miles is nothing.

I am debating on if I want to race this or not. Anyone have any experience…is it worth it if I am not doing the whole series and just one race?

Along with the weekly races I will be doing this season I am looking to have a busy season. I am also planning on driving out to Marymoor Velodrome to do some race out that way. I am going crazy watching track videos and getting days here and there where we can ride our track. I want to race. I want to see how much I have improved from last season. I want to upgrade. I want to go to race in San Jose, Encino, LA, Seattle. I want to race at nationals but that will most likely be next year. I have this fire inside me that I have never had before and I need to get it out. Put it all down on the track and show no mercy. I must race faster, harder and more aggressive than I ever have to achieve my goals. This winter I have been working my butt off to do better on the track and I really hope it all pays off. 5/5 can not come soon enough.
